The projects objectives were to create a new city oriented around a "Main Street".  Creating the ratio of mixed-use, density, scale and proportions vital to sustain a vibrant community.  Just as vital was creating safe, pedestrian friendly  environments that encourage movement while designing flexible connective spaces for open air markets, fairs festivals and celebrations based on our guidelines for New Urbanism.

PROJECTS
BETHESDA ROW
Michael Kindzierski served as Lead Architect for this award winning project which was on the forefront of new urbanism and incorporates strategies for a live work and play environment.

Intended to create a special urban place that reflects the character of Bethesda, this shopping district re-establishes the center of an existing downtown neighborhood. A variety of new uses enlivens days and nights with one-of-a-kind shops, restaurants, offices, apartments and entertainment venues. The unique urban character of the new buildings mirrors that of the older buildings in Bethesda and a wonderful street and sidewalk experience features shade trees, outdoor restaurants and cafes, fountains and public art. Bethesda Row received the Citizen's Neighborhood Coalition award for the Most Beautiful Place in Bethesda and has become the new Town Center of Bethesda as polled by Washingtonian magazine. Bethesda Row also received the Urban Land Institute Award for Excellence and the Congress For The New Urbanism Charter Award for Best Block in America.

A historical hotel gets a new coat of paint

Reston Town Center combines elements of the ideal downtown: the vitality of an Italian piazza and the diversity of a French boulevard. Easy -to-access stores make shopping a year round pleasure. Famous names and specialty shops line the brick streets.

The centerpiece of this project is beautiful Fountain Square, an open civic plaza which boasts the Mercury Fountain at its center. Lush plants, low seating and broad steps make this area very inviting to pedestrians. Beyond the fountain, a variety of different artworks and the open-air Pavilion complete this lovely area.

Year-round special events make Reston Town Center the focal point of the community and Northern Virginia’s “downtown”.
